Mental Health Stigma: Breaking the Silence

Despite growing awareness, mental health stigma remains a significant barrier to treatment. Nearly 60% of adults with mental illness received no treatment in the past year, and stigma is a primary reason why.

Types of Stigma

  • Public stigma: Negative attitudes and discrimination from society
  • Self-stigma: Internalized shame and beliefs that you're 'weak' or 'broken'
  • Structural stigma: Systemic barriers in healthcare, employment, and housing

How Stigma Harms

Stigma doesn't just hurt feelings — it has real consequences:

  • Delayed or avoided treatment
  • Worsening symptoms and outcomes
  • Social isolation and loneliness
  • Reduced self-esteem and self-efficacy
  • Employment and housing discrimination

Breaking the Silence

  • Talk about it: Sharing your story reduces shame for others
  • Educate yourself: Mental illnesses are medical conditions, not character flaws
  • Language matters: Say 'person with bipolar disorder,' not 'bipolar person'
  • Support others: Listen without judgment and encourage treatment
  • Advocate: Support policies that improve mental health access
