Understanding OCD: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatment
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects about 1 in 40 adults in the United States. Despite common misconceptions, OCD is not about being organized or perfectionistic — it's a serious mental health condition that significantly impacts quality of life.
What Is OCD?
OCD is characterized by two main components:
- Obsessions: Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety
- Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared outcome
Common OCD Themes
- Contamination: Fear of germs, illness, or dirt
- Harm: Fear of causing harm to oneself or others
- Symmetry: Need for things to be arranged in a specific way
- Taboo thoughts: Distressing unwanted thoughts about violence, sex, or religion
- Checking: Repeatedly checking locks, appliances, or information
Treatment Options
Effective OCD treatment typically includes:
- SSRIs: Higher doses often needed than for depression or anxiety
- ERP therapy: Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold standard psychotherapy
- Combination treatment: Medication plus therapy for best outcomes
