Understanding OCD: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatment

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects about 1 in 40 adults in the United States. Despite common misconceptions, OCD is not about being organized or perfectionistic — it's a serious mental health condition that significantly impacts quality of life.

What Is OCD?

OCD is characterized by two main components:

  • Obsessions: Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant anxiety
  • Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety or prevent a feared outcome

Common OCD Themes

  • Contamination: Fear of germs, illness, or dirt
  • Harm: Fear of causing harm to oneself or others
  • Symmetry: Need for things to be arranged in a specific way
  • Taboo thoughts: Distressing unwanted thoughts about violence, sex, or religion
  • Checking: Repeatedly checking locks, appliances, or information

Treatment Options

Effective OCD treatment typically includes:

  • SSRIs: Higher doses often needed than for depression or anxiety
  • ERP therapy: Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold standard psychotherapy
  • Combination treatment: Medication plus therapy for best outcomes
