What the evaluation covers
- Presenting symptoms — what they are, how long, how much they interfere with work, study, and relationships.
- Full psychiatric history, including previous diagnoses, hospitalisations, and every treatment already tried.
- Medical history and current medications, because thyroid disease, sleep apnoea, anaemia, and a long list of prescriptions produce psychiatric symptoms.
- Sleep, substance use, and family history — three areas that change the diagnosis more often than any others.
- Validated rating scales where they add information: PHQ-9, GAD-7, ASRS-v1.1, PCL-5, MDQ.
- Risk assessment, conducted directly and without euphemism.
What you leave with
A working diagnosis explained in plain language, a treatment plan you have agreed to, any prescription sent electronically to your pharmacy, a follow-up appointment already booked, and referrals where they are warranted.
Why an hour and a half
Because the conditions that imitate one another cannot be separated in fifteen minutes. Undiagnosed sleep apnoea presents as inattention. Bipolar disorder presents as depression until someone asks the right questions about past highs — and an antidepressant given without asking can precipitate a manic episode. Thyroid dysfunction presents as anxiety. Getting this wrong is not a minor inconvenience, so the first appointment is long on purpose.
